How long should a freelance proposal be
Most freelance proposals should run two to four pages. One page feels thin for anything over a thousand dollars. Over six pages, nobody finishes, and the decision gets delayed.
Length should follow price. Small fixed jobs get two pages. Mid-size projects get three to four. Anything above ten thousand deserves a full document with phases and terms.
Cut ruthlessly by asking of every paragraph whether it answers a client question. Company history, tool lists, and process diagrams almost never survive this test.
Put detail in appendices, not the body. Timelines, full feature lists, and terms belong one click past the decision, keeping the main flow readable in five minutes.
If the client asked for something specific like references or a portfolio, give exactly that and nothing more. Answering the brief precisely beats impressing generally.
